How the estimate is calculated

The model treats climbing grades as a linear difficulty scale, combines consecutive efforts through an energy curve, and reduces carried fatigue according to rest quality. Very easy sections stop changing the result; much harder sections dominate it.

Boulder cruxes are converted asymmetrically: power at the start is less costly than the same power sequence after sustained climbing. Results include soft, hard, and split-grade estimates when difficulty falls between grades.

How does the climbing route grade calculator work?

Describe the climb from bottom to top. Add sustained route sections, short boulder cruxes, and the rest quality between them. The estimator combines their difficulty, order, and accumulated fatigue into a final French route grade.

How do I calculate a boulder grade from individual moves?

Choose Boulder, add sections of two to five moves or isolated hard moves, then select an approximate Font grade for each effort. The calculator combines the sequence into an estimated overall boulder grade.

Why does section order change the result?

A hard boulder crux after sustained climbing is usually more demanding than the same crux at the start. The model accounts for accumulated fatigue and reduced power later in the climb.

Are calculated climbing grades exact?

No. The result is a structured estimate. Real grades depend on rock type, movement, route length, conditions, beta, morphology, local grading, and climber consensus.
