Climbing grades explained
Climbing grades describe the technical difficulty of a boulder problem or climbing route, but countries and disciplines use different rating systems. This climbing grade converter translates the most common bouldering and sport climbing scales into practical equivalents for gym sessions, outdoor climbing, guidebook research, and international trips.
Boulder grade conversion
V-scale—also called the Hueco or Vermin scale—is widely used for bouldering in North America. Fontainebleau grades, usually shortened to Font grades, are common across Europe. Use the bouldering grade converter to compare V0 through V17 with Font 4 through 9A.
Font bouldering grades use uppercase letters, such as 6A or 7B+. They are different from lowercase French sport grades like 6a or 7b+.
Route grade conversion
French grades are widely used for sport climbing in Europe. The Yosemite Decimal System or YDS is common in the United States, UIAA grades appear across central Europe, and Ewbank grades are used in Australia and other regions.
